Painless Dentistry

  No-Drill Dentistry

No drill or drill-less dentistry allows removal of dental decay without the dreaded whine of the drill and often without the needle, too! The technology uses forced air and a safe, small particle substance to etch away the decay rapidly and without the vibrations and heat of the dental drill. It can get at decay sooner because it is a fine spray so you can keep your natural teeth for life. Few patients need anesthesia of any type.

  Dental Laser

We use the exciting dental laser to gently and effectively treat the ravages of gum disease usually without numbing anesthesia. It stops the progression of the tooth and bone destroying disease. Laser treatment helps to eliminate the need for conventional, often painful, gum surgery in up to 75% of cases.

The laser can also be used to gently and artistically refashion the gum line. It can turn short teeth or a gummy smile into the smile you’ve always wanted.

  Electronic Anesthesia

No pain. No needle. No Drugs. No after effects. This technology precisely controls the dosage of anesthesia so you get only the amount required to painlessly complete the procedure. It is used in the more common procedures we perform that require numbing. You’re no longer leaving with a completely numb face after every tooth restoring procedure.

  In-Office Sedation

We offer many ways to make our patients who are undergoing complex smile restorations feel comfortable. Oral medication can provide conscious sedation that makes everything go away: stress, worry and memory of the procedure.

  One-Visit Root Canals

The root canal is a procedure that has kept many people away from the dental office including those who might not need one, just because of the ‘mythic lore’ behind the term. Much of the reason for the fear wasn’t so much the discomfort, but the technique used. It used to be, and still is in many offices, a manual or imprecise mechanical process.

At our office we use the latest technology. We can precisely locate the apex of the root electronically and with a computer controlled device, we can remove the damaged or diseased root efficiently and more comfortably.

  Surgical Telescope

Precision in surgery means comfort is increased and results are improved. The surgical telescope makes esthetic enhancement better because we get an up close view of the artistry we’re creating. It increases surgical comfort because it enhances accuracy, reducing the time we need to perform each procedure.

Digital X-rays

digital-xray at Richmond Smile Center

Digital x-rays have less radiation that traditional x-ray machines and there is no need for processing film of the image. Your X-rays can be seen by Dr. Backer within seconds of taking them. Then he can go over the results with you on our in-room computer screens.

Intraoral camera

Dental-Intra-Oral-Camera

Intraoral cameras are tiny digital cameras that fit comfortably in your mouth and enable Dr. Backer to show you an enlarged image of your smile on a computer screen.

PerioScope

perioscope at Richmond Smile Center

The PerioScope provides real-time visualization of gum tissue health below the surface (enhanced by intense illumination and 24-48X magnification), helps diagnose root fractures (which are not identifiable by the naked eye) and catch decay early when it starts down around the root.

LightWalker® Dental Laser

lightwalker dental laser in Richmond VA

Dr. Martin uses the LightWalker® dental laser and PerioScope for the examination and treatment of gum disease. The LightWalker is used for many procedures, including pain-free periodontal cleaning and laser gum surgery.

Zoom!

Zoom Whitening in Richmond VA

Zoom! Teeth Whitening is a safe, long-lasting procedure that can whiten your teeth an average of 8 shades in about an hour. First, Dr. Backer applies the special Zoom! Whitening Gel to your teeth, and then uses the special, low-heat Zoom! Light to activate the gel to remove deep stains and discoloration. Long-lasting Zoom! for a brighter, whiter smile in one visit!

DIAGNOdent

diagnodent at Richmond Smile Center

Comfortable, laser-assisted cavity detection.

The traditional way to detect tooth decay was by touching the surface of the teeth with a metal probe. If the metal probe stuck, then there was a cavity.

Using DIAGNOdent laser technology, Dr. Martin can detect early tooth decay without taking the chance of missing even the smallest cavities. The laser probe detects even the smallest problems before they become large, and it does so painlessly.

Implant Dentistry

Dr. Martin is trained in a new and revolutionary approach to implant dentistry, one that often allows a patient to have dental implants and be restored with teeth in a single appointment the same day! What once required months can sometimes be done in an hour. This is amazing news for those who suffer with uncomfortable dentures and partials or missing teeth.

Dr. Martin also uses SimPlant software, a 3D virtual placement system, so he can show you what your implants will look like before you even start.

Onset™ by Onpharma

Dr. Martin’s fillings are fast and gentle. Onset, by Onpharma, is a buffering agent that works by changing the pH of the anesthetic, lessening or eliminating the pain experienced in a traditional dental injection.

SomnoMed dental device

Anti-Snoring Mouth Guard

For treating snoring or sleep apnea, Dr. Martin uses the SomnoMed dental device, an intra-oral device that resembles a custom fitted mouth guard.
