Frank’s Story
For Frank, his teeth had never been a priority. He had always been so busy. He had dutifully paid for all three kids to get braces and his wife went to the dentist regularly. Now the kids were out of the house, he decided to take a more careful look at his appearance. It was one of those regular mornings before work when, after brushing his teeth, he stood there and looked at them.
Frank told us, “I’m not sure why I really noticed them that morning, but I did. And I did not like what I saw. My smile was, shall we say tattered. My teeth had darkened. They were quite yellow. My old dental work was showing its age. I had thought my teeth were OK. I mean acceptable, at least. They really weren’t. That was when I decided to do something.
As a big league executive, Frank was at a place professionally where he needed every edge he could garner. Freshly minted MBA’s were joining his company every year. Although these were two and three levels below him, he knew they would be his competition in the future.
Already his former colleague, Richard, had reached the C-level position he coveted. “It dawned on me later that morning after I had really noticed my teeth that Richard had had his teeth fixed. He received the nod of promotion instead of me. I knew that results of performance mattered, but I think his new smile gave him the edge I didn’t have. I mean we were both pretty equal otherwise.”
Frank got his smile makeover done. Moreover, we found an oral health- total body health connection to Frank’s pre-diabetes and snoring. (It is estimated that over 57 million adults over age 40 are pre-diabetic. Pre-diabetes means that one’s fasting blood sugar is in the range of 101 to 125. 126 and above is considered diabetic.)
“I wish I had this done years ago. I know it has made a real difference for me. I feel so much better about myself. My wife says I look fifteen years younger. Within a few months, my promotion came through too. Now Richard and I are colleagues once again. And my wife is much happier now that my snoring is no longer a problem. My M.D. says the diabetes screening was a good catch. I’ve even lost weight.”
Frank made a difference for himself that ended up helping him get a promotion (and the increase in pay that comes along with it). His wife told us privately that not only can she get a good night sleep, but also likes having her husband smile all the time. He is happier… and so is his wife.
