When teeth have severe decay or damage,
dental crowns can be the ideal solutions for protecting and strengthening teeth. It is important these concerns be addressed, because, if left untreated, infection can develop. The team at Richmond Smile Center in the Henrico area offers dental crowns that blend naturally with the smile and ensure long-lasting results with excellent oral hygiene habits. We are happy to explain the purposes of dental crowns and what can be expected throughout treatment.
Understanding the purpose of the crown
The anatomy of the tooth can be divided into the root and the crown. The part of the tooth that is visible (above the gum line on a lower tooth and below the gum line on an upper tooth) is called the clinical crown. A dental crown, or cap, is placed on a tooth, completely covering the visible portion of the tooth.
There are various materials used for a dental crown. We have selected the most natural materials – ceramic and porcelain. Depending on the needs of a patient, we will determine the right type of crown for him or her.
What can be expected during treatment
We recommend scheduling a consultation to explore candidacy for dental crowns. The dentist will examine the patient’s mouth, teeth, and gums and review his or her medical history. If the patient is a candidate for a dental crown, a treatment plan will be created. After shaping the tooth, an impression will be taken, and the crown will be fabricated.
Local anesthetic is used to provide the utmost comfort during the procedure. The tooth will be minimally prepped. The crown will be checked for precise fit and ideal color before placement. Instructions will be provided to ensure
the crown can last many years.
