Laser Therapy for Gum Disease FAQs

What is laser dentistry?

Laser dentistry is an emerging method of dental treatment which uses lasers for treating gum disease, gum contouring, smile design, and many other procedures. Sometimes laser dentistry can be used for cosmetic dental work including enhancing teeth whitening, and curing dental restorations more quickly. Dr. Martin uses a LightWalker dental laser, which is a handheld device.

What are the benefits of laser gum disease treatment?

  • Quicker procedures
  • Safe
  • Comfortable
  • No cutting or sutures necessary
  • Less noise and pressure
  • Less need for anesthesia

Is laser therapy safe?

FDA approved since 1990, laser gum therapy is safe. Using specific wavelengths, the laser will dissolve the bacteria and decayed material without harming the surrounding gum tissue. You can rest assured that Dr. Martin has undergone special laser dentistry training and education to bring you quality laser dentistry care.

What is the procedure for laser gum therapy?

Before undergoing laser gum treatment, Dr. Martin must first determine your candidacy. We offer free consultations for laser dentistry at Richmond Smile Center. If you are a candidate, Dr. Martin will start by putting protective glasses over your eyes for added safety. A periodontal probe will determine the depth of your periodontal pockets. These are bacteria filled pockets that create a separation from your gum tissue and tooth. More advanced cases of gum disease will have deeper periodontal pockets.

Using a handheld laser adjusted to a specific wavelength, Dr. Martin will eradicate the decayed material and bacteria. You may only feel a rush of air in your mouth as this is often used to keep your mouth cool during the procedure. After sterilizing your gum tissue and making necessary bite adjustments, Dr. Martin will reattach the gum tissue to your clean tooth root. Eventually healthy bone and ligament will form where the tooth was once damaged.
