Is using a mouthwash beneficial?

June 10th, 2011

Unlike dental fluoride, mouthwash has not been a subject of debate for dental and health professionals. Instead, the use of mouthwash is a personal choice for people looking to enhance their daily hygiene habits.

Some doctors, however, are convinced that mouthwash is beneficial to oral health for the following reasons:

1. A mouthwash with fluoride will help reduce cavities and periodontal disease.

2. Using mouthwash in general, even one without fluoride, can help reduce periodontal disease.

3. Mouthwash can make your mouth feel fresh and your breath smell better.

4. Mouthwash can reduce the amount of dental plaque and bacteria in your mouth.

Although mouthwash is beneficial to your oral health and hygiene, it cannot be relied upon solely for good oral health. Instead, mouthwash should be the final step in a daily routine that involves thorough brushing and flossing.

No two mouths are the same, so the right mouthwash and dental hygiene regiment for you may not be effective for someone else. Make an appointment with Dr. Charles Martin at The Richmond Smile Center so that he can help you design a dental hygiene routine that keeps your mouth healthy and feeling great.
