The Scoop On Fluoride

January 19, 2012

You’ve probably heard from your dentist how important fluoride is to your oral health. Although many people know that fluoride is in toothpaste and helps fight cavities, many of us may not know how it works, what it actually is, and the definitive research that accompanies its widespread use. Dr. Charles Martin and his staff at Richmond Smile Center have compiled some interesting facts about fluoride below to help you understand just how important it is.

Interesting Facts About Fluoride

  • Fluoride is a mineral that is naturally present in food, water, and other substances.
  • In the 1940’s, the United States government and many Western European Countries added small amounts of fluoride to water supplies
  • Since the inception of fluoridated water, tooth decay and cavities are far less common.
  • Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel. This is why children are given fluoride treatments during their formative years.
  • Fluoride neutralizes the acidic environment in your mouth that erodes tooth enamel. This acidity, formed by bacteria and plaque, can wreak havoc on your oral health.
  • Most toothpastes contains fluoride. When buying toothpaste, look for the American Dental Association’s seal of approval.
  • Patients who are experiencing tooth decay may need more fluoride than the amount currently present in over-the-counter toothpastes and mouth rinses. In this case, Dr. Martin may provide in-office fluoride treatments to help reverse the effects of tooth decay.
  • When added to water, fluoride doesn’t change the taste or color.
  • Every day foods and beverages strip our teeth of important minerals. Fluoride actually remineralizes our teeth, especially in weak spots.
  • The fluoridation of water supplies has greatly improved the oral health of underprivileged people who may not have been able to afford dental care.
  • Since 2004, over 400 million people have benefited from fluoridated water
