Interesting Dentistry, Believe It or Not!

December 7, 2010

I’m Dr. Charles Martin of the Richmond Smile Center. My team of dental hygienists, dental assistants, and office administrators love caring for patients. Seeing the genuine, life-changing joy that someone experiences after getting a smile makeover or dental implants is a gift we’re quite addicted to. And while people are our primary reason for existence, we also love dentistry. You probably think, Dentistry. Snore! But that’s only because you don’t know what we know.

There are some amazing things going on in the dental field right now. For instance:

Scientists are turning wood into a bone replacement. Seriously. Heat up some red oak, rattan, or spiro until its only carbon, then add calcium and pressure. After one week and less than $1K, you have a bone substitute. This prosthetic material, once usable in humans, could transform the dental implant industry.

Scientists are creating a gel to regenerate tooth structure. This is not science fiction. Instead of drilling and filling a cavity, scientists hope that dentists will be able to use this new tooth-regeneration gel. The gel does not prevent cavities, it cures them. Cells actually regenerate over about one month. No more root canals? Hmmmm.

Here’s one more for you…

Scientists have developed a way to test for HIV, cancer, and many other diseases by using human saliva. This is actually in use right now. Some experts believe that saliva testing will replace blood testing in future generations.

Dentistry is amazing! If you’ve heard about some amazing new dental developments, or if you’d like to ask questions about something you’ve heard, feel free to leave a comment here, and I’ll respond promptly. This is Dr. Charles Martin of the Richmond Smile Center wishing you a day filled with smiles!
