Dental Implants – Here’s How It Works

August 13, 2010

The steps of the implant procedure itself: If there is a damaged tooth that must be removed, it is removed comfortably. Once the tooth is removed an assessment is made on whether to place an implant at the same time or let the site heal where the tooth was.

If the site needs to heal, a bone graft is placed to help preserve bone while it’s healing. Once the bone is healed, a small implant is placed in that space. You can think of the implant like a grooved or threaded titanium post.

Your body begins to bond to this titanium post right away. It can take somewhere between three and six months before we can go to the next step.

Your body does not reject these materials but ties in with them with great strength, as if they were a natural part of your body.

Once a titanium implant is tightly in place a post, like a dowel is now attached down into and on top of the dental implant. Often these are screwed into place.

And then a new tooth is made to fit on top of this post. Voila! You have a new tooth and you’re the only one who knows it’s man-made.

In fact, implants are so comfortable you’ll soon forget what one is. Your body thinks it’s your own and so will you. If you’re missing teeth, it’s the best investment you can make in your future dental and total body health.
