Is Snoring Or Sleep Apnea
Ruining Your Life Or The Life of Someone You Know? There IS something you can do about it!
Does your sleeping partner snore? You are not alone. Millions suffer from these very real problems. While many people joke about snoring, it really isn’t a laughing matter. While the person snoring is usually unaware and undisturbed, the sleeping partner is very much aware because it can wreck his or her sleep! Moreover, snoring can be a sign of a serious condition known as sleep apnea. Apnea means cessation of breathing. With many snorers, cessation of breathing can occur hundreds of times a night! Each of these stopped breathing events often last thirty seconds or more. Let’s do some simple math: 30 times per hour of apnea (a common number) x 30 seconds each equals 15 minutes an hour of not breathing. Can you imagine the consequences of failing to get vital oxygen to your body’s cells? They slowly starve for oxygen. If you don’t breathe, you die. If you don’t breathe well, you get sick. The reason is that your brain is constantly waking you up because of a lack of air. The natural body response is to awaken you so you can consciously breathe. Most people do not remember these micro-arousals, and they play havoc with getting the proper rest. Sleep has different stages. When you wake up frequently, you’ll get too little of the sleep stages you need. In either category, sleep apnea or “rough sleep”, one does not get the rest one needs and it can cause one or both of the following:
